My morning began with rumblings of “It’s been a whole week; you’ve not restocked the popsicle stash!” Oh, the horrors of it. So, I had to redeem myself and rectify the oversight pronto.

Given the unbearable heat and humidity we’ve been facing, I was happy to indulge the kids. But I did decide to take a brief hiatus from all things peach and dive into Jamun.

Jamuns / Java Plums

Nutrient-wise, Jamun is predominantly water and carbohydrates with nil sugar and enough minerals to make a great snack. The fruit also packs a punch of astringent properties that are excellent for the skin.

Better known by the moniker black plums or java plums to the rest of the world, the deep black, shiny fruit makes a short but really delicious appearance during the months of summer in India.

For those who haven’t discovered the rapturous world of the fruit that looks remarkably like berries (think bigger cousin), here’s a tiny sneak peek of its flavors.

As the season begins, jamuns are a touch tart and have an astringent aftertaste. But as the first rains hit the parched earth, they get sweeter. This is the time when I start obtaining hordes of them, and when the market is all out, cajole someone into plucking them from the neighborhood parks!

Right now, it is the quintessential time to have jamuns, which is why I replenished the dwindling pop stash with Jamun Yogurt Popsicles.

How To Make Jamun Yogurt Popsicles?

Anytime I make something easy, and these jamun yogurt popsicles are as easy as it gets, the kids are included in the process.

So, I ferried my son to the kitchen and got him to pit and chop the jamuns, while I whizzed honey and Greek yogurt. I split the mixture, with one half going into the molds and the other blended with the fruit.

Once I had a smooth jamun-yogurt-honey mixture, it went into the half-filled molds. A little swirl and within 5 minutes the pops were packed up in the freezer to be enjoyed later in the afternoon (though you really should freeze them overnight).

Didn’t I mention they were that easy?

Variations Of Jamun Yogurt Popsicles

Substitute for Greek yogurt

Hung, homemade yogurt is a great replacement for Greek yogurt, or you can even try coconut yogurt. I used it for my peach shortcake, and it’s surprisingly very thick and utterly creamy.

Make the pops creamier

We often indulge in popsicles as breakfast, but if you want them as desserts, I recommend switching the yogurt to full cream. The pops turn richer and creamier than you can imagine.

For a vegan option, try coconut cream or a mix of half coconut milk and half coconut cream.

Substitute for honey

If you’re not in the mood for honey, maple syrup or even agave works just as well.

Serving the Jamun Yogurt Popsicles

Creamy, sweet-tart, and refreshing, these fabulous popsicles are meant for snacking and dessert.

Because jamun is a low-calorie fruit packed with antioxidants and a moderate amount of Vitamin C and calcium, we had the popsicles for our breakfast too.

The same family who swore up and down that they were ‘not a Jamun fan’ slurped the pops up in no time! Phenomenal, I believe, is the word all of them used.
