Recipe Ingredients

Labelled ingredients for making puff pastry apple donuts.

Apples: Use any variety you like. I used Gala here as we have been eating those lately!

Puff pastry: Store-bought or homemade, both will work well here. Make sure the pastry is thawed for easier handling.

Cinnamon powder: For making cinnamon sugar - that makes these apple pastries taste so good! You can also use pumpkin pie spice as a variation!

Sugar: Regular granulated sugar is fine. You can also use brown sugar for a more caramelized flavor.

Egg: For brushing on the pastries. This is optional. You can use cream instead if you wish. Both will give a nice sheen to the donuts.

Top Tips

  • If the puff pastry gets too soft, pop it back in the fridge for a few minutes.
  • When wrapping the apple rings with puff pastry, you can wrap tightly for a fully covered look or leave small gaps so the apple peeks through. Both work beautifully!
  • If you're assembling the apple pastries ahead of time, don't dip them in cinnamon sugar before wrapping, as that will make the apples watery and the pie crust soggy.
  • Also, keep the assembled pastries in the refrigerator for no more than 4-5 hours.
  • Bake the puff pastry doughnuts on parchment paper. This will make clean-up much easier.

How To Store

These puff pastry apple donuts are best eaten the day they are made!

  • Store baked puffed pastry donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To refresh, reheat in the oven or air-fryer for a few minutes. Avoid the microwave as it makes the pastry soggy.

How To Serve Puff Pastry Donuts

These golden apple puff pastry donuts are really delicious as-is, served warm and fresh from the oven. That's how we enjoyed them! You can also sprinkle them with powdered sugar.

These go rather well with a cup of coffee or tea. Try it with some warm homemade apple cider, a classic hot chocolate, or a creamy oatmeal latte!

Go extra and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and top with:

Recipe FAQs

What are puff pastry apple donuts?

Puff pastry apple doughnuts are apple slices that are dipped in cinnamon sugar, wrapped in puff pastry, and then sprinkled with more cinnamon sugar and baked until golden and flaky. They are like a quick version of classic apple pies!

What kind of apples work best for this recipe?

You can use any kind you like - Gala, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji. Pick firm apples that will hold their shape after baking and not turn mushy.

How do I store leftover puff pastry apple donuts?

Refrigerate the leftover donuts in an air-tight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in an oven or air-fryer; avoid the microwave, as that will make the pastries soggy.

Do I need to peel the apples?

No! There is no need to peel the apples. The skin did not bother us at all after baking. But it's a matter of preference... please peel them if you prefer.
