Why We Love This Recipe

Pretty straightforward and foolproof recipe.

Comfort food with the bare minimum effort.

Green pea soup is wonderful for lunch. It will fill you up without weighing you down.

Fantastic for when you've run out of ideas for dinner.

Pea Soup Ingredients

Peas: Fresh peas are flooding the market right now, and they are superbly sweet and delicious, so that’s what I used. That said, frozen will do just as well if you don't have any at home.

Mint brightens up the split pea soup with its unique, cool flavor. Though I strongly recommend using fresh mint, I will not judge you if you stir in some dried leaves instead!

The cream gives the soup a richer texture, a touch of sweetness, and that velvety finish. You can use regular cream instead of coconut cream.

Add-ins: Throw in some parsley, basil, or cilantro if you prefer. A small bit of herb goes a long way toward "waking up" the soup. My creamy pea soup is vegetarian, but you can add ham or bacon to it too.

How To Make Creamy Pea Soup

Step 1: Heat oil in a medium-sized saucepan or pressure cooker.

Step 2: Add the chopped garlic and onions. On medium heat, sauté till translucent (3–4 minutes).

Step 3: Add green peas, dried oregano, mint leaves, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Step 4: Add water or vegetable broth, mix well, and cover. Leave the pea soup in the crock pot for 20–30 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and cooked through.

Pro Tips

  • If you’re making pea soup in a pressure cooker, cook it for 2 whistles. Open the lid when the steam is completely released.
  • If making the soup in a covered pan, let it cook on a gentle simmer.
  • If the cream of pea soup is too thick for you in step 6, add some more water or broth to get the consistency you prefer.

Can You Make Pea Soup With Frozen Peas?

For sure! You can make pea soup from frozen peas or fresh peas. Frozen peas are a convenient option and work well in creamy pea soup recipes. When using frozen peas, simply thaw them before adding them, or you can even add them directly to the soup pot if you prefer.

How To Serve

I topped the creamy pea soup with some pan-roasted nuts and a swirl of coconut cream to keep it dairy-free. Serve with soft and fluffy challah bread, Parker house rolls, or crusty salted bread rolls.
